Food & Libations
“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” – Virginia Woolf
Food , wine and other libations have always been an important part of my life. I was blessed to have a Mother who was an adventurous cook. She integrated foods from all over the world into our diet due to being a military spouse. Each move we made or trips she took to foreign lands ended up on our table in some form or another. Both sets of my grandparents had a love for the craft cocktail of that time, a Manhattan served in a fancy glass and garnished with oranges, cherries, and good company. One of the things I enjoy most in my travels is the integration of fresh, local, ingredients into a craft cocktail. Such a great introduction to a destination. I have loved wine since my first wine tasting when I worked at a country French restaurant as a server. We learned what wines paired with the food we served. I loved being able to knowledgably recommend a wine. Food and other libations is such an important part of the travel experience.
Food
One of the joys of travel is discovering a destination’s food scene. This is a great way to meet the locals. I enjoy upscale restaurants but don’t let a strip mall restaurant discourage me. Some of the best food I’ve eaten has come from humble abodes. I still think about the tortillas and beans I tasted at a little stand at an old Spanish mission in Arizona. They were cooked by an indigenous woman and were so good I remember it 20 years later. My favorite food advice is always try something you can only get at that place.

Wine & Other Libations
I married into a wine making family, Testa Vineyards and have learned so much over the years. I am fascinated by the craft of winemaking and love the small, family vineyards where often the farmer is the wine maker. That connection to the land really resonates with me. I mostly buy my wine from tasting rooms. Farm to bottle to me is important because I know exactly where my wine has been through the entire process.
One thing I love about living in the Pacific Northwest is the plethora of craft distilleries, breweries, cideries, and other makers of libations. Craft breweries and distilleries in Washington State must use grains grown in the state. Many bars and restaurants serve locally made spirts and it makes a difference supporting small businesses. I am such a fan of the craft cocktail.
